Iff you have an individual therapist or primary care doctor, it can also be helpful to ask them who they would recommend. Ideally you want to look for someone with a proven track record of helping couples.

It doesn't hurt to ask your insurance provider to provide you with a list of marriage counselors that are covered by your plan. You can also ask your insurance plan about your out-of-network (OON) benefits. If you have OON benefits, then you may be able to work with a therapist who doesn't take insurance, pay up front, and then get reimbursed a portion of the fee by your insurance company.
What to expect in a marriage counseling session
The first session of marriage counseling is typically spent getting to know the therapist, and the therapist getting to know you.
