YOU REMEMBER A TIME WHEN FEELING ANXIOUS AND INSECURE IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WEREN'T THE "NORM" ...
BUT THOSE DAYS FEEL LIKE A DISTANT MEMORY. DON'T YOU WISH YOU HAD THE TOOLS TO CHANGE THAT?
You’ve come to the right place; I'm so glad you're here!
Picture of Elizabeth Polinsky, LCSW
I’m Liz, and I help couples just like you: ones that have it within them to change their relationship into one where both people feel understood, accepted, and cared for, but they just need the support to get there.

I help my clients find emotional closeness, security, and happiness in their relationships by equipping them with the tools they need to understand each other better, and talk about difficult topics in a more easy and comfortable way.

Many of today’s solutions for couples are based on quick tips for how to communicate better without working the underlying causes of  emotional disconnection in the relationship. These  quick tips may lead to some positive change, but the change often doesn't last very long -- leading so many to feel hopeless that their relationship can improve long term. I know that your circumstances are unique, so I stay with you through each step as you work to create long-term and lasting change based on the underlying patterns in your relationship.

First, we figure out the patterns or relationship cycles that are causing the problems in your marriage. Then, we work on helping change those patterns by developing communication and listening skills that will be most effective for you. Through our work together, you’ll be  able to repair past hurts and develop new patterns  that lead to a deeper sense of closeness, security, and bonding in the relationship.

I am dedicated to helping people create relationship security.

My training to become a Certified Emotionally Focused Couple Therapist means I have the expertise you need and deserve when improving your marriage. But at the end of the day, you want to know you’re working with someone who “gets” what it means to be in a marriage struggling with anxiety, loneliness, and miscommunication, right?

I get it because I've lived it myself. I know that frustration of trying everything in relationships and somehow things are still not going right. It's what led me to devote my career to learning about and helping others improve their relationships. So when we work together, you won’t just get a trained therapist. You’ll get someone who truly understands what you’re going through.

Liz, I still have more questions ...

Are you a licensed Therapist?
Yes! I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Virginia (#0717001945). I am also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia (#0904011022), Maryland (#30425), North Carolina (#C016144), South Carolina (#11302), Arkansas (#7735-C), and Nevada (#9860-C).
What is your degree in?
I hold a Master’s of Social Work degree from the University of South Carolina. In addition, I have a graduate Certificate in Social Work with Military Members, Veterans, and their Families from the University of South Carolina. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialization in Couple Therapy, and expect to graduate in 2023.
What is your previous work experience?
My career started with providing individual and group therapy for the Department of Mental Health in South Carolina as well as the Behavioral Health Clinic at the Veteran's Health Administration in Mississippi and Florida. While at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, I provided Warrior to Soulmate Couple Workshops to veterans.

In 2019, I joined in a group practice to complete my doctoral practicum and internships in couple therapy. The focus was on helping couples and families to build strong emotional connections, repair relationships, and communicate more effectively. In September 2022 I started my own private practice working with couples.

As a military spouse, I have a special
passion for working with veteran and military couples, and over half the couples I work with are either active duty military couples or veteran couples.
ARe you certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Yes! I am an ICEEFT Certified EFT Therapist and Supervisor Candidate. I was the first certified EFT couple therapist in the Hampton Roads area.
I heard you have a podcast...
I do! It is The Communicate & Connect Podcast for Military Relationships. With the podcast, I provide educational resources for military couples and families who are too busy or find it hard to coordinate schedules in order to attend regular therapy appointments.
DO you take insurance?
My rates for therapy are $300 per 50-minute weekly session.

I am considered an out-of-network provider, which means that I do not bill insurance. I am happy to offer you the necessary paperwork (superbill) to file with your insurance provider for possible partial or full reimbursement.

Please know that not all insurance plans offer reimbursement and that some may have a deductible or an allowable amount. It is best to call the number on the back of your insurance card and speak to a representative about what your specific benefits are. I'm happy to talk this through with you at any time.

For more information, please see the FAQS pages.
What do you do outside of therapy?
I hang out a lot with my husband and our pets. We are in the process of training our goldendoodle, Bella, to be a therapy dog! I am also involved in research projects, clinical supervision and training of new therapists, and participate in ongoing Emotionally Focused Therapy consultation. Finally, I am the host of The Communicate & Connect Podcast for Military Relationships and provide relationship education through blogs, youtube videos, workshops, and retreats. I also do a lot of dancing such as Kizomba, Lindy Hop, Balboa, and West Coast Swing. I have been dancing over 15 years and it is by far my favorite hobby!
